Curatorial Notes |
In the mid-1800s, Brooklyn was home to over forty-five local breweries, making it one of the largest centers of beer production in the United States. Brooklyn's access to good quality water, a large work force, and its convenient port and proximity to Manhattan's large market made it the perfect place for brewers to set up shop, particularly in the neighborhoods of Williamsburg and Bushwick. A new generation of entrepreneurial Brooklynites, German immigrants who arrived in America with a knowledge of beer production and successful brewing recipes, fueled the growing industry. By the 1970s, the combined impact of several factors-including Prohibition in the early 1900s, postwar deindustrialization, and competition from national brands-forced most of Brooklyn's breweries to either close or relocate. |
