Town of East Hampton. Most easterly town on Long Island, includes the peninsula of Montauk and Gardiner's Island, 110 miles from New York. Settled in 1649 by about 30 families from Lynn, Mass. [Massachusetts] and the towns adjacent. The town continued an independent Plantation of community, till 1657 when they put themselves under the jurisdiction of Connecticut. Population in 1687 [was] 502, of which 25 were slaves. [handwritten on page]
