The first settlers were Walloons who arrived in 1624. They did not remain long,removing to Long Island, because of thier fear of Indian hostilities. [unidenfiable word] the first Patroons or landed proprietors of New Netherlands was Pauw, to whose share Staten Island fell. The first settlement was made about 1630 by David Peterson De Vries near Old Town (Oude Dorp) About 1661 some French Waldenses and Huguenots settled at the island. [handwritten on page]
