Twelve reproductions of this image, labeled a-l The Long Island Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street, Brooklyn Heights was built between 1878-80 by George B. Post, a leading New York architect of the time. The entensive use of terra cotta on the four-storey exterior, representing busts of great men of history, was the first such use of terra cotta in America. The busts chosen show a good deal about the nineteenth century goals of the Society, which in those days sought to collect all knowledge: on Pierrepont Street the bust of Columbus represents disc
