The Charles (Karl) Blieffert photograph album dates from 1908 to 1917 and includes 249 black and white photographs of young friends of Charles Blieffert in the Coney Island, Sheepshead Bay, and Brighton Beach neighborhoods of Brooklyn. The photographs show bathing fashion, boat rides, dinner parties, and other social gatherings. Highlights include a shot of the Knickerbocker Field Club (1917), a dead shark being pulled from the water (1916), the Blieffert family home at 18th Avenue near Gravesend Avenue, and a clam bake at Felton's. Many of the photographs are dated and identified with handwritten information on the verso.

Charles (foreground in hat) is pictured with his parents, Charles and Helene (back right), and two unknown relatives, in Coney Island. Tintype studios were big business in Coney Island in the late 19th century through the early 20th century, and many trips to the beach included a souvenir photograph. The studios were either set up in tents or in storefronts. Some included elaborate backdrops and props. In this photograph, you can see a bit of the backdrop hanging from the ceiling beams. It's likely that this photograph was taken during a family outing to the beach, and the photograph was taken home as souvenir.
